Paths of History
(Bologna, Emilia Romagna region)
tableaux vivants and living history displays from different time-periods, from the ancient Etruscans to the WW2 troopers, hundreds of historical reenactors, a whole town turned into an open-air history museum for the biggest multiperiod historical re-enactment in Italy…
Geographical, cultural and historical context
The event takes place in Crevalcore, a town located in the Po Valley, about 30 km from Bologna, in the Emilia Romagna region of Northern Italy. Crevalcore is historically mentioned first in a document dating to the year 1130 AD. The today Crevalcore was refounded by the nearby municipality of Bologna between 1226 and 1231 AD after the complete destruction of the previous settlement in year 1219 by the hands of the troops of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250 AD). The town still maintains its original squared layout which dates to the Middle Ages and consists of 32 identical blocks.
Courtyards and arcades embellish the buildings facing the main street, "via Matteotti", while the central square host a 1897 bronze sculpture commemorating Crevalcore’s most famous son, the scientist Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694 AD), an Italian biologist and physician, who founded the science of microscopic anatomy, histology, physiology and embryology, and mas made by the Royal Society in London an honorary member in 1669. Over centuries Crevalcore has long been disputed by the lords of Milan (the House of Visconti) and the papal legates of Bologna.
The surroundings of Crevalcore are characterized by several beautiful country manor-houses or villas, often called "castles", built by the Bolognese nobility starting from the 15th century. These ancient residences, which often boast works of art by renowned artists, include "Castello di Palata Pepoli" with its notable porticoed courtyard and beautiful doors in Rococo style, "Castello di Galeazza Pepoli", constructed around an imposing 16th century tower, "Palazzo Bevilacqua Ariosti", a typical Bologna senatorial residence, and the architectural complex of "Villa Ronchi" or "Castello dei Ronchi", that consists of a 16th-century noble house and an elegant 18th-century church, and was built in the same-name area of Ronchi near Crevalcore. The complex belongs today to the local council and used as an exhibition hall and cultural centre, hosting also the yearly late medieval event: "4 Steps in the Middle Ages".
Event description and programme
Every year in April, Crevalcore turns into an open-air history museum for the biggest multiperiod historical re-enactment in Italy. A series of "flashbacks" from different time-periods, from Prehistory to the Second World War, are vividly displayed thanks to 250 reenactors coming from all over Italy and for free to support the rebuilding of the town heritage hit by the 2012 earthquake. The event takes place in the downtown and is organized by "I Sempar in Baraca", a local association involved in promoting the history and traditions of Crevalcore and its surroundings.
Each historical reenactment group evoke a specific time-period through living history displays, interactive workshops, battle and combat reenactments, music and historic dances, and other initiatives. The historical reenactors all dressed in faithful historical clothes and interpreting characters from the specific time-period portrayed are more than ready to interact with the audience sharing their knowledge and the results of their historical research. A real time travel into the past that provides the visitors with the unique chance of a full immersive, live-in experience to relive the daily military and civilian life of different historical periods. Besides, several artisans and traders offer workshops showing their skills while exhibiting a sort of evolution of artefacts, objects, fashion, weapons, books, toys and jewels over centuries.
