Medieval festival in Hostalric
Feria Medieval d'Hostalric
Hostalric, Girona (Catalonia aut. community)
Hostalric is a well preserved medieval walled town situated on a narrow pillar of basalt along the left bank of the Tordera river, at its confluence with the Arbúcies stream between the Montnegre coastal mountain range and the inland Montseny massif, at about 40km from Girona and 60km from Barcelona, in Spain. The town is listed as Site of National Interest thanks to its remarkable heritage which includes several fine architecture and the imposing 18th century fortress rebuilt on the ruins of a former medieval castle atop a hill overlooking the main north-south route running from the Pyrenees to South Catalunya.
Every year on Easter weekend Hostalric celebrates its yesteryear during the Middle Ages, when under the rule of the Lords of Cabrera, the town became the administrative capital of the extensive territories of their viscounty as well as one of their main strongholds. So for a whole weekend Hostalric turns into a medieval village with a great and busy market crowded by many historical characters and enlivened by the typical activities of the period among the stalls selling all kind of goods and natural products. The rich programme includes falconry and archery displays, itinerant performances with street theatre, storytelling and juggling, music and dance shows, demonstrations of traditional handicraft and typical medieval trades, guided tours to discover Hostalric architectural heritage, and many other cultural and leisure activities. Headline of the event is the reenactment of a great medieval banquet.
