Karmøy Viking Festival
Avaldsnes, Karmøy municipality (Rogaland county)
Avaldsnes, formerly an independent municipality, is now a part of the municipality of Karmøy in Rogaland County and is located at the north end of the island of Karmøy, near Haugesund. Avaldsnes was an ancient centre of power on the west coast of Norway and is the site of one of Norway’s more important areas of cultural history.
Each year in June Avaldsnes, together with the Viking garden, hosts the Viking Festival. The Viking garden has several reconstructed houses from the Viking age, and the buildings help to create the unique atmosphere of this celebration of the past. The Viking festival is full of fun experiences for both children and adults. Over 200 Vikings from Norway and Europe makes the Viking farm an insight into the Viking age. At the big market there can be met the traders selling their crafts, food to tempt your taste spuds, and music for your senses. The visitors can actively participate in archery, horseback riding, rowing, workshops and other activities. Among other experiences are the entertainers, such as puppet theater, storytellers and battle reenactors.
