Festival of the Limbourg Brothers
Gebroeders Van Limburg festival
Nijmegen (Gelderland province)
Edition 2016 marks the 600th anniversary of the Limbourg Brothers' supposed decease of the plague.
The city of Nijmegen is located in the province of Gelderland in the eastern Netherlands, near the German border. It is considered the oldest city in The Netherlands, becoming an important commercial and cultural centre in the Middle Ages. The Dutch art of painting started in the town of Nijmegen, and many famous medieval painters were born and educated there, among them Paul, Herman and Johan van Limbourg, known commonly as the Limbourg brothers, famous above all for their Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, possibly the best example of French Gothic manuscript illumination surviving to the present day.
The largest medieval festival in the Netherlands, dedicated to the talented brothers and their works, is held every year in Nijmegen, bringing to life their miniatures of the medieval life. Art is made alive, through identical medieval clothing, authentic music, dance, acrobatics and play, exciting knights’ tournaments, delicious food and drinks of old recipes, authentic ways of work and falconry shows.
