Pesaro Antiqua - Feast of May
Pesaro Antiqua - Festa del Maggio
Next edition dates to be announced (the event was last held in 2012)
Pesaro (The Marche region)
Pesaro lies along the Adriatic sea, about 35km from Rimini and 60km from the Falconara airport, in region Marche, in central Italy and boasts a great artistic and historical heritage rich in fine architectures and monuments. Pesaro, which is also famous for being the birthplace of Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868, Italian opera composer) as well as for its wide sandy beaches, was founded by the Romans in 184 BC as a colony by name Pisaurum in the former land of the Picentes, the people who, during the Iron Age (1200 BC - 400 AD) lived in Picenum, in the northern Adriatic coastal plain. The area was then invaded by the Senones, a Gaulish tribe coming from France, who settled along the Adriatic coast during 3rd and 4th centuries BC, and finally colonized by the Romans. and it was just during the Roman Empire that Pesaro became an important center of trading and craftsmanship as well as a strategic hub along the Via Flaminia (the ancient road leading from Rome to Ariminum, the today Rimini, on the coast of the Adriatic Sea).
Every year in May the beautiful Baia Flaminia (around Campo di Marte) becomes the set of an event of great historical and cultural value, known as “Pesaro Antiqua”, and before - Feast of May. The Celtic crafts market, music, various shows and historical reenactments illustrate the customs and the traditions of the ancient Senones Gauls. The visitors get also a pleasant opportunity to relive the inspiring atmosphere of the celebrations of Spring, by tasting ancient flavors and sublime drinks, enjoying the tournaments between skilled fighters, listening to the magical stories and the delicate sound of Celtic harps, or dancing to the frenetic rhythm of drums, violins and bagpipes in the light of the night fires. During the event the historical camps and marketplace are animated by the Reenactors coming from all over Italy to offer educational activities and workshops on all aspects of daily life of the Ancient Civilizations, Celts, Romans and Greeks and Etruscans, who came along in the area mixing with each other and creating a rich ethnic and cultural melting-pot.
