Geographical, cultural and historical context
Santa Maria da Feira is a Portuguese parish and the seat of the Santa Maria da Feira Municipality, and its surrounding area is often known as Terra de Santa Maria. Emblematic of Portuguese medieval military architecture, the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira, located in the parish, is one of the monuments that best reflects the diversity of defenses used during the Middle Ages, having been instrumental in the process of Reconquista and autonomy of the County of Portugal.
Event description and programme
Medieval Journey in the Land of Santa Maria is the annual event in Santa Maria da Feira, aimed to reenact some historical moments that marked the Portuguese medieval everyday life, in an atmosphere of culture and leisure. The Medieval Journey is dedicated each year to a certain theme and historical events that took place in the region during the Middle Ages, illustrating e real exciting story from the past, about kings and common people, intrigues and conquests, wars and peace. The event offers military demonstrations and reenactment, like duels and jousts of knights, sieges and battles, tournaments of archers, and various representations of the medieval daily life, crafts, trade, feasts, leisure activities of the nobles and common citizens, followed by historical narrations and explanations.
