Tuoro sul Trasimeno (Umbria region)
Theatrical events, demonstrations and worskhops, historical parades and re-enactments, games and cuisine, the customs and traditions of the Roman and Carthaginian civilizations revive in an exciting journey through time and culture bringing back the visitors to the period of the Punic Wars, to the year 217 B.C. and the famous Battle of the Lake Trasimene: Hannibal's trap on the Romans, the largest ambush in military history...
Geographical, cultural and historical context
Tuoro sul Trasimeno is located in a dominant position on a small hill over looming the plains north of Lake Trasimeno, about 25 km northwest of Perugia, in Umbria region, in central Italy. The village of Tuoro, nestled around its Medieval centre, was founded atop a lakeside hill in the thirteen hundreds, although there are also remnants of an older, Etrusco-Roman settlement. Its name is probably derived from the traditional fishing technique employed by the lake’s fishermen, who used bundles of coppice wood known as "tori".
The landscape around the lake is itself an open-air history museum, where visitors can follow a trail winding along the scenery of the epic battle which was fought in 217 BC along the shore of Lake Trasimeno between the Carthaginian army led by Hannibal and the Roman Legions under Gaius Flaminius Nepos. Besides the charm of history and local folklore, Tuoro also offers to the visitors an excellent cuisine and a beautiful natural environment thanks to the lake with its shores and islands, and the wonderful countryside surrounded by thick forests of oaks and holms. On June 22, 217 BC, one of the largest ambush in military history took place there: the Carthaginian army led by Hannibal heavily defeated the Roman Legions of Gaius Flaminius Nepos. The battle, which ended with the massacre of the Roman legionaries in the waters or on the nearby slopes, and the death of Flaminius himself, was the third great victory of Hannibal’s Campaign in the Italian Peninsula after the ones gained at Ticino and Trebbia rivers during the "Second Punic War" (or "The Hannibalic War"), which lasted from 218 to 201 BC.
Event description and programme
The yearly celebrations provide several events recalling that famous event: the historical dinner presenting Roman Republican and Imperial dishes faithfully prepared according to the recipes of Apicius, one of the greatest Roman cooks, and cheered by aromatized wine and performances of maids and musicians in period costumes. The programme includes as well an historical parade and the exciting race of the Roman two-horse chariots, the famous bigae. Everything helps to recreate the atmosphere of the ancient Rome in a magical journey back to the time of the Punic Wars and the Roman Republic Age. Finally the guests can also visit an interesting documentation centre, which is devoted to the battle and the figure of Hannibal, and is active in Tuoro since 1996.
