Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Perugia (Umbria region), ITALY
Tuoro sul Trasimeno is located in a dominant position on a small hill over looming the plains north of Lake Trasimeno, about 25 km northwest of Perugia, in Umbria region, in central Italy. The village of Tuoro, nestled around its Medieval centre, was founded atop a lakeside hill in the 13th century, although there are also remnants of an older, Etrusco-Roman settlement. Its name is probably derived from the traditional fishing technique employed by the lake’s fishermen, who used bundles of coppice wood known as “tori”. Besides the charm of history and local traditions, Tuoro also offers a great cuisine and a beautiful unspoiled nature with the Lake Trasimeno, its shores and islands, as well as the wonderful countryside surrounded by thick forests of oaks and holms.
On June 22, 217 BC, the shores of Lake Trasimene witnessed one of the largest ambush in military history: the Carthaginian army led by Hannibal heavily defeated the Roman Legions of Gaius Flaminius Nepos. The battle of Lake Trasimene was a critical event during the "Second Punic War" (also referred to as "The Hannibalic War", or "The Carthaginian War"), which lasted from 218 to 201 BC. The Punic Wars were a series of three wars fought between Rome and Carthage from 264 BC to 146 BC. The Battle of Lake Trasimene ended with the massacre of the Roman legionaries in the waters or on the nearby slopes, and the death of Flaminius himself, and was the third great victory of Hannibal’s Campaign in Italy after the ones gained at Ticino and Trebbia rivers and before the final slaughter at Cannae.
Every year Tuoro sul Trasimeno is home to a great historical reenactment of the famous battle between Hannibal's army and the Roman Legions, a two-day event featuring hundreds of Reenactors from all over Italy inside a real ancient Roman castrum which has been accurately rebuilt by the local Legio I Taurus based in Tuoro. The very rich programme provides a wealth of leisure and educational initiatives, including living history displays and guided tours to the Gallic-Carthaginian and Roman military camps, which are accurately recreated concerning the weapons, the clothing, and the period language. The visitors will have the chance to follow the maneuvers and exercises of the two armies, enjoy music and dance shows, ancient theatre performance, and taste the traditional Roman cuisine of the period. The Sunday programme is mainly focused on the reconstruction of the different phases of the battle: an outstanding Roman Republican army is clashing with Hannibal's "multicultural" army made up of Libian-Phoenicians, as well as warriors from different nationalities and countries (Gauls, Iberians, Ligurians...) all faithfully recreated. Finally, the landscape around the lake is itself an open-air museum, where visitors can follow a trail winding along the scenery of the epic battle between Rome and Carthage.
