Brintaal Celtic Folk
Bosco delle Fontane, Cismon del Grappa (Vicenza, Veneto region)
cultural events, concerts, folk music and folk dances, workshops and living history displays, good and authentic Irish gastronomy for a great event all dedicated to the Celtic culture taking place over 10 years in a beautiful valley of Northern Italian Veneto region…
Geographical, cultural and historical context
The new setting of the Brintaal Celtic Festival is Cismon del Grappa, a village located at the northern end of the Brenta canal, on the border with Valsugana (Sugana Valley), one of the most important valleys in the autonomous province of Trentino in Northern Italy, where the ancient Roman Via Claudia Augusta, one of the main communication routes between the Italian peninsula and Germany, connecting the Adriatic Sea with the historic town of Augsburg. After having passed by hands several time, including the Lords of Feltre, Verona, Padua and Milan, and the counts of Tyrol, in the early 15th century Cismon became part of the dominions of the Serenissima Republic of Venice, flourishing while keeping and further consolidating its historic autonomy.
Cismon del Grappa appears to have been first mentioned in year 1127, but its origins surely date some earlier as one of the oldest places on the Brenta canal located in a strategic location controlling a transit pass in the border territory between Padua, Feltre, Trento and Vicenza. Not by chance several military works were built in the area, such as the “Covolo di Butistone”, an ancient medieval fortification built inside a karstic cavity ("covolo") near a rocky wall on the narrowest point of the Brenta Canal, and Fort Tombion, located in the northern part of the Brenta Canal at about 1 km from Cismon del Grappa, and one of the very first fortifications of the Italian defensive system built soon after Veneto’s annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, in 1866.
Event description and programme
Every year at the end of August, Cismon del Grappa is home to the Brintaal Celtic Folk, one of the most important Celtic festivals in Italy, which takes place in the beautiful setting of the so-called The Bosco delle Fontane (The Forest of Fountains), a nature reserve located along the valley of Brenta at an altitude of about 200 m above sea level and consisting of a riparian forest of about forty acres. The festival, founded in 2002, is now an outstanding event, which is rooted in the tradition and in the local territory, but also breathes through buds projected on all the Celtic lands and the future with the aim to promote the knowledge of the Celtic culture, music, traditions, cuisine. It's also an event dedicated to the beautiful valley in which it is hosted, its traditions and charming places hidden among streams, ancient villages and clearings in the woods.
Folk music is music that should be enjoyed and shared by all, and not only limited to a narrow circle of connoisseurs, and the Brintaal Celtic Folk Festival reflects this very simple philosophy offering the audience the chance for a fascinating journey through places and times of the Celtic Lands thanks to a rich music programme and internationally renowned artists. The wide panorama of initiatives includes conventions, conferences, and a variety of cultural events dedicated to the culture of the ancient Celts and the northern folks, music concerts and dance shows under the stars, stages of folk music and dance, as well as craft markets, nature and historical guided walks and tours, exhibitions, displays of archery and experimental archaeology, workshops for adults, leisure and educational activities for children, the excellent Irish cuisine, and, not least, the beautiful natural scenery.
